5 Ways to Celebrate the Reason for the Season

Angel for Christmas

Can you believe we’re just days away from Christmas? At this time of the year, it’s hard not to be in the holiday spirit with constant reminders of Christmas, such as music, decor, seasonal desserts, holiday-scented items and the crowded shopping malls. One thing we often don’t see enough of, however, is the reason for the season: Christ.

Christmas has become such a commercialized holiday that many people forget it’s a day for giving, rather than receiving. And with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it can be difficult to keep the focus on the birth of the Savior.

If you, too, are looking for ways to keep Christ in Christmas this year, here are five simple ways to celebrate the reason for the season from our family at Peace Missionary Baptist Church.

Create a Spiritual Christmas Song Playlist
While we love all classic holiday songs, like “Jingle Bells” or “All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey, we also enjoy the songs that remind us of the blessings Christ brings to our lives. This Christmas, try creating a playlist on iTunes or Spotify exclusively filled with holiday music about Christ such as “Silent Night”, “O Holy Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?”, for a pleasant reminder.

Comfort a Missionary with Kind Words
Missionaries are often sent to spread Christ’s words in remote locations around the world. Unfortunately, many of these devout men and women are unable to spend the holidays with their families due to their religious mission. A kind, unexpected, handwritten letter can not only boost one’s spirits, but also encourage them to keep going.

Enjoy a Christ-Centered Christmas Activity with Your Little Ones
Whether it’s a coloring book about the birth of Christ, a printable word-search found online about Mary and Joseph or a book about “The Little Drummer Boy”, there are variety of fun ways to engage children as you teach them the reason for the season.

Volunteering

Give to Those in Need
Being an advocate for Christ also means helping those who are in need of aid, battling poverty and/or unable to overcome their current circumstances. If you don’t have extra funds to support a child who may not be able to enjoy Christmas with family, consider dedicating your time to a service-based task like feeding the homeless or volunteering time caroling at a local children’s hospital this season.
